KYRON GLANCED HELPLESSLY at his papa as Braydon wailed some more and clung on harder even as he tried to put him onto the sofa. “Braydon, Braydon,” Papa said impatiently. “Stop behaving like a spoiled child or I will make Kyron leave.”

Braydon cried harder, if that was even possible. “I think you’d better get Aaron Shul here,” Kyron said and sat on the edge of the sofa, Braydon still clinging to his hand.

Papa nodded and made the call while Kyron did his best to calm Braydon down, but nothing he was doing seemed to help. “You can’t make me go back to that monster,” Braydon declared.

“I’m not going to make you do anything,” Kyron responded in as reasonable a voice as he could manage. “But at some point, you’re going to have to let go of me. I need my hand back.”

“I should never have let you go in the first place,” Braydon declared just as Kyron heard more angry voices and the office door swung open so quickly it nearly ripped off its hinges.

“Vincent?” Kyron stood, quickly gazing at the bigger man, and Braydon had to let go of him. Vincent, eyes flashing, body practically vibrating, stalked over to Kyron and grabbed his shirt front, hauling him close.

“You bastard! He’s mine. Mine, do you hear me?”

“Vincent,” Braydon choked out, and Vincent immediately shoved Kyron away from him, so hard he went stumbling into Papa.

“Braydon,” Vincent echoed and sank down onto the couch. “Darling, are you all right? Did he hurt you?” Braydon sniffed and more tears welled over, but he let Vincent take his hand. “I’ll kill anyone who so much as looks at you in the wrong way.”

Kyron cleared his throat. “Death threats aside, can someone please explain to me what’s going on?”

Vincent glanced at him, glowering. “You can hate me all you like, but I will never allow—”

“I get it,” Kyron interrupted, not interested in another round of dramatic declarations. “I just want someone to explain to me why the hell Braydon is here in the first place. I arrive home barely ten minutes ago to find the house in an uproar, and no one will tell me what’s going on.”

Vincent looked puzzled for a second, glanced at Kyron, then back at Braydon. “You haven’t been here all day?”

Braydon sniffed, then shook his head. “I went to the barn.”

Vincent seemed to deflate. “You were with the kittens.”

“What kittens?” Kyron asked, not sure he even wanted to know.

Braydon’s eyes welled again. “Aldred said he was going to get rid of them and you promised I could have one.”

“After the baby’s born, sweetheart. You know what the doctor said.”

“But they were crying,” Braydon whispered pitifully, and Kyron watched in almost stunned fascination as Vincent seemed to melt there and then. He eased Braydon toward him gently as much as Braydon’s round belly would allow.

“I promised you would have one, and I promised I would always take care of you. The doctor just said you can’t go near a litter tray while you’re pregnant.
